Hippie Birthday to Tom Constanten of the Grateful Dead!

Tom Constanten

If you know Tom Constanten , then you know the place inside you where his keys tickle your spine.    And if you don’t know who he is, I bet you’ve been tickled anyway.

He was one of Phil Lesh’s early friends:

“Phil Lesh was standing in line at Cal Berkeley’s music department in 1961 when he overheard a young man, Tom Constanten by name, remark that Music stopped being created in 1750 and began again in 1950. They shook hands, and became friends for life…

from Dead.net The Band (bios)

He advised about creative keyboard’s on Anthem of the Sun  and Aoxomoxoa  as well as being a touring member of the Grateful Dead from the end of 1968 to early 1970.  He felt he was underamplified!

Enjoy this selection of T.C. that you can turn up!  A few clips of his solo piano mastery, as well as him sitting in with other Dead bands.  I remember an L.A. area show or two he played with Remnants of Eden round 1996 or so… does anyone have any footage of that?

Love you TC, you’ve rocked my soul for many years!

Furthur news… Lane leaves for Primus! Phil in the Zone! Furthur Festival line up announced…

Questions and rumors are flying, as they usually do in the Phil Zone.  Jay Lane is leaving.  Was it personal?  Will Phil hire John Molo away from Moonalice ?  Who thinks who sucks?  Why does Phil bother with the Ritter?

Then a “newbie ” (based on the number of posts) to the Zone steps in to clarify.  This Newbie happens to be Phil Lesh.  Gotta love that Phil steps in to the zone.

Here is a summary of what Phil confirmed:
Jay Lane is leaving Furthur to play in Primus.  Jay told Bobby the news on the bus at the end of Winter Tour; Phil found out the day before the birthday show.  Phil loved playing with Jay, and also supports him in doing what is best for him.  So in effect, Phil’s Birthday show was Jay’s last Furthur show…

Regarding Furthur’s percussion:   Phil and Bobby “…are of one mind. Joe Russo…”.

Phil stated he and Bobby are both fans of the single drummer Billy Kreutzmann years, implying that Furthur was going that direction.  He did mention:  “I don’t mean to denigrate Mickey in any way; I. too, love the magic and mojo he brought to the band.. ”

Phil mentioned the intention to keep Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia Becker:
“I think so, but they both have babies, and are still trying to work out their personal logistics.”

Covering the Bass’s:
I discovered that the Ritter wasn’t getting out front as well as I’d like; it sounded great on stage but not in the PA. I’m thankful I had the Modulus to go back to.

Phil said that he will try and bring  Lazy Lightning>Supplication into the next rehearsal cycle.

Phil had to go to see his son’s band playing in the city last night (Maiden Lane , formerly Vice)

And Phil also reminded us to check Furthur’s site this morning for line-up nad ticket news about Futhur Festival. Here is the news

7 WALKERS
FEATURING BILL KREUTZMANN AND PAPA MALI
ANNOUNCE SPRING / SUMMER TOUR DATES

BILL KREUTZMANN LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE, RELEASES LIVE MUSIC AT NUGS.NET, AND SPEAKS OUT IN SUPPORT OF PRESERVING THE GRATEFUL DEAD ARCHIVES.
LOOK FOR 7 WALKERS’ NEW STUDIO ALBUM TO BE RELEASED LATER THIS YEAR.

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann, together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Mali, officially unveil 7 Walkers’ spring plans. 7 Walkers, which also features bass virtuoso Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, JFJO) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.

Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since), first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy’s for real man, I like this guy.’ Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn’t separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can’t plan it; You can’t make it happen. And then we started playing together.”

Live audio recordings of the 7 Walkers can be heard at the newly re-launched www.billkreutzmann.com.
Meanwhile, at nugs.net, fans can now download live BK3 recordings from their 2009 Colorado shows. Another potent Kreutzmann musical project, BK3 first toured in 2008 and featured a rotating lineup including such players as guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and bassists James “Hutch” Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers), and Mike Gordon (Phish).

Bill Kreutzmann is also working to support the efforts of University of California at Santa Cruz, who has committed to helping to archive all things Grateful Dead. As Kreutzmann explains, “I am incredibly happy that the kind archivists at UC Santa Cruz understand the social value of [the Grateful Dead’s] priceless archive, and its hallowed meaning to our most beloved ‘Dead Heads.’ Without the care it is now going to receive, these treasures would be lost.”

REVIEW: Moonalice, March 13, 2010, 19 Broadway, Fairfax, California

Moonalice band When making plans to see Phil Lesh’s Birthday show in San Francisco last Friday, we checked around to see who was playing nearby on Saturday night.  I was really happy to hear Moonalice  was playing in Fairfax, and at 19 Broadway , the bar where Furthur had played stealth last year.

White Cloud Moonalice (John Molo) – bass and drums  Sleeping in late after Furthur and Friends (wow, what a night!) and visiting family and friends in Sonoma county , and another short nap, it was time to go to Fairfax .  Another charming Marin  town – aren’t they all?  The bar was smaller than I expected, and of course I had to think what it was like to see Furthur there.  I thought there was to be an Opening band, I saw Crypitcal  listed, perhaps a Dead band? If they played, it was earlier than I got there!

Steve Parish  is their road manager  begins the show with an important message about solving White Cloud Moonalice (John Molo) – bass and drums the healthcare crisis, and sets the legendary tone as herallies the tribe and  introduces the  band.  The band breaks into “Down The Road A Piece ”. Life Insurance for Deadheads – (happycat on The Ben Stiller Show)

Reposted from Deadheadland:

I was lucky enough to be part of this! The Ben Stiller Show  contacted Lynn Roblar of Restless Native  (a store in Venice Beach at the time) and had her gather some friends with cool deadhead vehicles, and we set up a mini Shakedown in the Warner Brothers lot at The Burbank Studios .  Most of these folks were not big stars yet, including Janeane Garofalo , Andy Dick , and Bob Odenkirk .  We were there all day, got paid for the use of our vehicles, and were used as “unpaid” extras as well.   We all made a little extra selling some tie-dye and jewelry to the cast and crew too!

My van is the red VW with all the cool stickers.  They put duct tape on some stickers to avoid needing to get permissions.  Watch closely, you might even see me in the background.
