Run for the Roses Weekend – JGB with Melvin Seals in the Bay Area September 3,4,5 2010

MELVIN SEALS - by luvbrent for Deadheadland My first weekend as a California resident was heightened to its fullest by three JBG shows.

JGB played at The Don Quixotes International Music Hall in Santa Cruz on Friday, at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on Saturday and then at a festival at a beautiful outdoor venue in Monte Rio on Sunday.

On Saturday the show was recorded for an upcoming CD, Melvin debuted his new organ and the boys debuted some new songs. That night I had some non-verbal exchanges with both Melvin and the gals.

The weekend ended with an awesome Tangled Up in Blue! Enjoy the photos from Saturday’s show. Here are the set lists for Saturday and Sunday:

Band Of Brotherz – San Francisco 8/28/2010 – hip hop for hippies…

Jay Lane Band Of Brotherz Band Of Brotherz

I had a great time at the Band Of Brotherz show in San Francisco!  There was a rumor of Wier sitting in, and he never made it, but the show was worth it anyway, way fun, and saw some good people too!

Band Of Brotherz  features Jay Lane on drums (Furthur, Ratdog and Band Of BrotherzPrimus)  this Band mixes up some genres, surprises expectations and gets into you and gets you groovin’! Funk and Hip Hop, Reggae and Rock – and lots of grateful vibes.   Be open minded about it, you’ll enjoy it.

This is not a Dead cover band by any means, but the influence is there, and a number of songs use dead riffs and rhythms.  It feels familiar yet different – and easy to dance with it.

Uplifting and energizing! Hip hop for hippies!  Positive and unifying and genre defying.

Three shows this weekend – Ganjapalooza!

The Mint in L.A. Fri Sep 3
Festival of Hope in Visalia on Saturday September 4th

Band Of Brotherz is:

Zachariah Mose (Ironmonk)

DDonna GOTV 2010 Close Up onna Jean McKay (formerly Godchaux) was the only female memeber of the Grateful Dead.  She sang with the boys in the 70’s, her husband Kieth was their keyboardist.  Dona Jean has also done vocals for Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding.

More recently she has been part of these bands:  Donna Jean and the Tricksters, The Heart of Gold Band and the Donna Jean Godchaux Band.

If you want to listen to a Grateful Dead Donna birthday show, check out this 8/22/1972 recording from the Berkely Community Theater (BCT) – How about the GDTRFB?!

Donna GOTV 2010 CU 2 Here is a  video treat from7/18/2009, the Donna Jean Godchaux Band performing a rare 70’s Jerry Garcia tune The Mighty High. She is joined by a couple of back up "Donnas"  – Lisa Mackey from Dark Star Orchestra and Lizzy Friel from Reflections (too bad the name The Donnas is taken…)

Thanks Donna for doing your part to make sure the music never stops!
