Mickey Hart performed this soundscape on a replica of the Golden Gate Bridge, using encoded sonifications of sounds from the Golden Gate Bridge itself.
from Mickey Hart:
…In honor of the 75th Anniversary Festivities of the Golden Gate Bridge, I will perform my original composition of the sounds of the bridge at the finale at Crissy Field on Sunday May 27th. The most famous bridge in America is actually a musical instrument, which sings its signature song every day, yet its song has never been heard before. Imagine hearing the bridge as intensely as you hear an intimate whisper, a scary scream, an ever-present low-level hum.
To compose the piece, I used data from accelerometers placed all over the span, and “sonified” the data with the help of Mark Ballora of Penn State, Ben Yonas and Jonah Sharp. “Sonification” is the process of converting information and data into music. These accelerometers, designed primarily for seismic events, monitor vibrations of the bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge vibrates from its toes (earth, water) to its thighs (pillars of cement and steel), to its torso and crown (air, sky). We have created a musical soundscape based on the real sounds of the bridge.
I will be performing these extraordinary sounds live on “Bridgette”, our 23-foot long, stainless steel scale model of the Golden Gate Bridge, built by a team of Exploratorium designers and engineers. I’m also bringing the band along for the ride. Come join us for the finale of the festival on Sunday night at 9:50pm at Crissy Field, right after the fireworks. Baby, will there be fireworks!
As part of the 75th birthday of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Grateful Dead’s drummer Mickey Hart will play a replica of the Bridge.
From KGO ABC San Francisco:
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — On Memorial Day weekend, the Golden Gate Bridge’s 75th birthday celebration will include a unique performance: a legendary Bay Area musician will be playing a giant replica of the bridge.
Some time back in the late 1960s or early 70s, just as the Grateful Dead was becoming a powerful musical force, one of the band’s drummers became entranced by the Golden Gate Bridge.
“I sensed that there was sound coming from the bridge and I pictured it as a giant wind harp,” Mickey Hart said.
Hart wanted to play the bridge like an instrument, so he snuck out in the middle of the night with a rubber hammer.
“Tapping on the bridge and trying to record it,” he said.
The police kicked him off.
“And then I came back a second time and I was unceremoniously taken off the bridge, this time in handcuffs,” Hart said. (read the whole story here)
SAN FRANCISCO, CA- The Mickey Hart Band has announced new “Above the Clouds” tour dates for late May and July, in support of their brand new album, Mysterium Tremendum. The band has also released Volume Two in their video series about the record. The video features Dave Schools explaining what drew him into the project. “One thing that pulled me in to this project, was what became the song “Who Stole The Show?,” says Schools. “I’d come over to the studio two years ago and play some bass lines on some really long grooves with the Sounds of the Universe, and then I’d go off and go on tour with Widespread Panic. Then I’d come back six months later, and all the grooves and loops had been cut into tunes with Sikiru singing the Ifa. The tune blew my mind. It was nothing like I had ever heard before. It pulled me right in.” Fans can download “Who Stole The Show?” for free at http://www.mickeyhart.net/download.
