Greetings, all music fans.

Djesben, (jazz band in Javanese) with their unique and beautiful sound, rocked a packed house Satrday night at The New Deal Café a little gem in Greenbelt, MD.

Their eclectic jazz meets folk, meets bossa nova, meetsimprovisational bliss, can also melt suddenly into a very pretty “Norwegian Wood” (Beatles), before landing itself squarely and unapologetically in the middle of a Grateful Dead jam that you’d never see coming!

In fact, center stage on percussion, including congas, cymbal and chimes, is Katy Gaughan, (wife of Furthur’s lead guitar and vocalist John Kadlicek), and she is simply gifted, folks!

With layers of rhythm woven around Topher Dunne’s exquisite melodic tones on his Chapman Stick (a ten-string tappinginstrument with the range of a piano) along with Christian Crowley’s Appalachian dulcimer, Chapman Stick and haunting vocals that harken one back to a young Brian Ferry,  Katy will take you, without permission, effortlessly into a world of a thousand beats, ornamental trills and chimes, all landing perfectly, clearly, each distinguishable from the other like a soft rain — while her thumping congas deliver a rock inside you that you just can’t help dancing to!

If that’s not enough, for a real treat, Katy’s husband John, with the hands and ear of a musical journeyman, sits in with the trio as he did last night on the violin – his first instrument picked up at age 8 — when he’s not on the road with Furthur.

With Katy’s infectious smile and exuberance and John’s humble, unassuming grace, it’s easy to see how the good energy that follows this couple is as strong as it is endearing.  Admittedly, biased as I am, I love seeing John play with “the boys” like he did a few weeks ago in Madison Square Garden, singing the sweetest “Morning Dew” I’ve heard in years, but these are people with whom you could just as easily share a quiet dinner, or go for an evening walk and talk of small things.

Together with their band mates last night, there was no question:  Djesben oozes a personality of cool, without airs.  The line between audience and musician becomes invisible, or at least blurred, creating an intimacy, an easiness thatI recognize from another band that we all know and love.

Bold?  Perhaps, but it’s easy to see from the audience that the people on stage, and their collective little jewel, Djesben, are not only touched by brilliance, but from the smiles on their faces you can see that they are genuine. They would easily switch places and dance all night with us if we were game for as long as we were willing.

Djesben is playing a select couple of shows in February, with special guests playing with them:
Feb 11th at Fireflies Del Ray in Alexandria, VA
Feb. 12th  Busboys and Poets with the Akoma Drummers to benefit Drumming Up From Poverty

The Music Never Stopped

Based upon “The Last Hippie” by Oliver Sacks, M.D.

http://themusicneverstopped-movie.com

Directed by Jim Kohlberg
Written by Gwyn Lurie and Gary Marks
Produced by Julie W. Noll, Jim Kohlberg, Peter Newman, Greg Johnson

Starring:
J.K. Simmons
Lou Taylor Pucci
Cara Seymour
Julia Ormond

“The Music Never Stopped,” based on the case study “The Last Hippie” by Dr. Oliver Sacks, M.D. (“Awakenings”), chronicles the journey of a father and son adjusting to cerebral trauma and a lifetime of missed opportunities. Through the music that embodied the generation gap of the 1960s, the film weaves the heartwarming progress of Henry and Gabriel.

With father and son on the opposite side of musical tastes as well as politics and the war in Vietnam, Gabriel disappears into the counterculture following a devastating confrontation with his father. The film opens nearly two decades later, when Henry and wife Helen (played by Cara Seymour) are told their son has been found wandering the streets of New York City. Gabriel has a brain tumor that has caused extensive brain damage, and needs immediate surgery. When he recovers, he is in a near-catatonic state, his brain damaged to the point that it cannot recall orcreate any long-term memories. Effectively, Gabriel still thinks he is in 1968.

After his operation, the extent of Gabriel’s condition is made clear: the tumor damaged the part of the brain that creates new memories. For Gabriel, past, present, and future are indistinguishable, and he still lives in the era of Vietnam, acid tests, and psychedelic music. Determined not to let their son slip away from them again, Henry and wife Helen (Cara Seymour) vow to connect with Gabriel, who is barely able to communicate effectively. Unhappy with Gabriel’s progress, Henry researches brain injuries, which leads him to Dr. Dianne Daly (Julia Ormond). She is a music therapist who has made progress with victims of brain tumors using music.

As Diane works more with Gabriel, she realizes that he seems to respond actively to the music of the psychedelic era – the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and particularly the Grateful Dead – which has a remarkable effect on Gabriel. He is able to have conversations and express himself, even though he is unaware the era of his music has long passed. Henry can’t stand rock and roll – but he is determined to forge some memories and a new relationship with his son. While his own health fails, Henry begins his own pilgrimage through the bands of the sixties. As he learns the
songs that animate his son’s soul, he indeed begins to form a most unusual but emotionally vibrant bond with the child he thought he had lost.

Mountain Jam 2011

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

MOUNTAIN JAM RETURNS TO HUNTER MOUNTAIN, NY JUNE 2-5, 2011

GOV’T MULE, MY MORNING JACKET AND THE WARREN HAYNES BAND TO HEADLINE

FESTIVAL ADDS FOURTH NIGHT OF MUSIC AND CAMPING

(January 11, 2011, Woodstock, NY) – Radio Woodstock and acclaimed guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band) present the seventh annual Mountain Jam Music Festival (MountainJam.com) at Hunter Mountain, in Hunter, NY from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5, 2011. For the first time, Mountain Jam will expand to include four days of music and camping. Early bird tickets are now available at MountainJam.com.

Gov’t Mule will headline Mountain Jam for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday, June 4. Gov’t Mule’s two-set performance at Mountain Jam VII will be one of only a few select appearances for the group in 2011. Modern rock heroes My Morning Jacket will return to the festival after five years to headline on Sunday, June 5. The newly formed Warren Haynes Band, a soul-infused ensemble will make its debut northeast festival appearance, headlining on Friday, June 3.

“It’s been great to watch Mountain Jam grow over the last seven years from a one-day concert to a multi-day, destination event,” says Haynes. “I’m really looking forward to this year’s line-up and to performing with both Gov’t Mule and the Warren Haynes Band.”

Mountain Jam favorites Michael Franti & Spearhead, hot off the smashing success of their latest hit album The Sound of Sunshine, will return for their sixth consecutive Mountain Jam appearance. The festival’s eclectic lineup will also see return appearances by crossover punk-Americana sensations The Avett Brothers, and modern blues-rock trailblazers North Mississippi Allstars.

A diverse array of first-time Mountain Jam performers will also join in, such as high-energy, hippie folk-pop collective Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, cross-genre banjo wiz Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, legendary blues-rock masters Electric Hot Tuna, rhythm & blues and gospel icon Mavis Staples, high-energy psychedelic rockers Portugal. The Man, West African-influenced Asheville, NC improvisers Toubab Krewe, and Dave Matthews’ collaborator and guitar virtuoso Tim Reynolds & TR3, among others.

Each night Mountain Jam will present additional late night entertainment both outside and inside Hunter Mountain’s Colonel’s Hall. The late night sets include the return of the hot, electronic jamband Lotus, the Canadian dance trio The New Deal and the recently formed supergroup, 7 Walkers featuring Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Papa Mali, and Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson).

For the first time, Mountain Jam will also provide music for early arrivals on the night of Thursday, June 2nd starting at 8pm. Funk/soul trio Soulive, will headline Thursday night’s offerings with a set of instrumental Beatles songs from their latest album Rubber Soulive. Rising Brooklyn-based soul-rockers The London Souls, and a late-night band still to be announced will round out Thursday’s entertainment.

“We are really excited to bring this amazing group of artists to the Mountain in 2011 and to expand the fun to a fourth night”, said Mountain Jam Founder, and Radio Woodstock President/Owner, Gary Chetkof. “Every year we strive to make the Mountain Jam experience better than the year before, and this year we know we are going to take this over the top!”

The festival’s forward-thinking Awareness Village will once again host a special acoustic stage, as well as exhibits from not-for-profit organizations and environmental groups, children’s entertainment, performance and sculpture art, physical and spiritual healing, a beer and wine garden, and much more. The Festival will also be continuing its greening efforts with recycling, carbon offsets, and free water refills to reduce the usage of plastic water bottles.

Originally conceived in 2005 as a single-day celebration of Radio Woodstock’s 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has blossomed into a four-day, multi-stage event, featuring onsite camping, and one of the northeast’s most pristine natural amphitheaters. Over the years, Mountain Jam has hosted some of the top names in live music, including The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh & Friends, Bob Weir & RatDog, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ray LaMontagne, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Les Claypool, Dave Mason, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Hold Steady, Coheed & Cambria, Drive-By Truckers, Dr. Dog, Medeski Martin & Wood, Mike Gordon, G. Last year, the festival presented Levon Helm’s 70th Birthday Jubilee with very special guests Warren Haynes, Donald Fagen, Ray LaMontagne, Sam Bush, Steve Earle, Patterson & David Hood, Jackie Greene and Allison Moorer.

The Hunter Mountain Lodge will provide fans with 24-hour access to both food and indoor bathrooms, while onsite camping and a variety of nearby hotels, lodges and ski chalets will ensure that all attendees have a wide variety of accommodations. This year Mountain Jam will also offer expanded VIP options, and will bring back its highly acclaimed “Tavern in the Woods” featuring private bar area and Hammock Grove, as well as a shaded hospitality tents, early arrival access at no additional charge, private camping areas, and a variety of gourmet food and beverages.
