Terrapin Crossroads – backyard firepit
San Rafael, California
All Children Are Our Children: A Candelight Vigil
with Phil Lesh, by the fire in the backyard at Terrapin Crossroads
Musical performance by Phil Lesh, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, Scott Law, Ross James
The evening air was chilly in Beach Park, Terrapin Crossroads backyard space, as we gathered around the fire pit, to share in our grief and our rage over the recent school shootings in Parkland Florida.
Phil Lesh somberly began…
All children are our children. That’s kind of an idea that speaks to the deepest level of our common humanity, so in a sense, we’re all responsible for our children, as it should be. Almost 400 years ago, a poet wrote, “No man is an island entire of itself.” In that same poem, he said, “Every man’s death diminished me, because I am involved in mankind”–as we’re all involved in mankind, as a wave is involved with the ocean. We’re still all God’s children. If every man’s death diminishes us, what can we say about the murdering of a child? [Note: John Donne “No Man Is an Island” written in 1624]
Two representatives from the local Marin chapter of Moms Demand Action spoke about how they are working for sensible and safer gun policies intended to reduce gun violence.
The Parkland 17 – their names and pictures, and a few details about who they were as people, were shared by Phil – their pictures then passed around the circle, as the vigil grieved this senseless loss of precious life.

Dedicated to John Perry Barlow

Terrapin Crossroads, San Rafael CA
The show opened with a beautiful Attics Of My Life, Phil Lesh, Alex Koford, Grahame Lesh – with Grahame’s guitar the sole instrument. Phil then spoke, a brief and beautiful eulogy to Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow. He said that tonight’s performance would be dedicated to Barlow, and the show included some of his songs, as well as plenty of songs that JPB would love to dance too. We mourn his loss, and celebrate his spirit. And we keep on dancing. On the original setlist, they were going to play “He Was A Friend of Mine”, which many of us in the room could say… the show ran long, and they kept the encore to one song, Box of Rain. Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be… to be…
We love you John – safe passage to the next adventure. And Thank you Phil Lesh, for your eloquent words, beautiful music, and the love you bring. We are truly blessed to be part of this Terrapin Nation.
Always grateful,
Happycat!
