Grahame Lesh joined Dead and Company, playing one of Phil Lesh’s famous instruments, the bass known as Big Brown, in a heartfelt rendition of his late father’s signature song, Box of Rain.
Not many dry eyes. We miss Phil so much, and this was such a sweet tribute.
Grahame Lesh has been leading the Heart of Town shows across town at Pier 48, with one more show tonight, Saturday August 2, starting at 10, after the Dead and Company show today. Heart of Town is also part of the Grateful Dead GD60 celebration taking place all over San Francisco, and the world.

Unbroken Chain
Lyrics:Bobby Petersen Music:Phil Lesh
Blue light rain, whoa, unbroken chain Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane Listening for the secret, searching for the sound But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds
Willow sky, whoa, I walk and wonder why They say love your brother but you will catch it when you try Roll you down the line boy, drop you for a loss Ride out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross
November and more as I wait for the score They’re telling me forgiveness is the key to every door A slow winter day, a night like forever Sink like a stone, float like a feather
Lilac rain, unbroken chain Song of the Saw-Whet owl Out on the mountain it’ll drive you insane Listening to the winds howl
Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls Unbroken chain of sky and sea Unbroken chain of the western wind Unbroken chain of you and me
The opening verse sung by a projection of Jerry Garcia, perfectly blended in with the live performance of Sturgill Simpson, and this tribute band assembled by Don Was, including Phil Lesh’s son Grahame Lesh on guitar m
The camera cut to the balcony where the remaining members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann sat with their family, and the emotion evoked by the sight and sound of Jerry from Bob’s wife Natasha Weir, and tearful eyes from Jerry’s daughter Trixie Garcia. Jerry Garcia passed away August 9, 1995.
I don’t think there was a Deadhead watching who wasn’t in tears as well. Such a beautiful tribute.
During another emotional part of the set, Grahame Lesh took a verse while an image of Phil was projected near him. Phil Lesh passed away recently, on October 25th, 2024. He knew of the Kennedy Honors, and as I understand, was planning on being there.
