Gloria Jones passed away yesterday, Friday February 1st 2019.
Deadheadland has no information on the cause of death.
Gloria was one of the singers in the Jerry Garcia Band, joining in September 1984, replacing DeeDee Dickerson, to sing alongside Jacklyn LaBranch, and continued with the band until Jerry Garcia‘s death in 1995 (wikipedia).
Their beautifully soulful gospel style of singing supported Garcia’s vocals and guitar, Melvin Seals keyboards, David Kemper‘s drums and John Kahn‘s bass lines, and are deeply etched into the hearts of so many of us.
Listen here to a few examples…
Gloria and Jackie have made a few guest appearances in recent years, singing in a few Jerry Garcia tributes, alongside original JGB member Melvin Seals, as well as more recent players Pete Lavezzoli , JP Mclean, Stu Allen, and Dead and Company’s Otiel Burbridge. Fans were elated to get to once again hear their angelic voices on these beloved songs.
We love you Gloria, and will miss you deeply.

BAND:
Doug Sahm – vocals, guitar
Leon Russell – vocals, piano
Jerry Garcia – vocals, guitar, pedal steel
Phil Lesh – bass
* Jerry Barnett – drums (Shiva’s Headband)
Mary Egan – fiddle (Greazy Wheels)
Benny Thurman – fiddle (13th Floor Elevator bassist)
* The drummer is often listed as Bill Kreutzman from the Dead, but apparently he didn’t play: “Though he was in attendance that evening, there is no verifiable evidence that Bill Kreutzmann sat in with the band. When asked a few years ago, the owner of the Armadillo seemed to recall Bill feeling sick that night.”
