easily one of the worst shows i’ve seen the band do since “79 (Bobby on “Days BTW”!!!!!………).
brutal.
aside from your own preference and opinions, which you ahve a right too, what makes this one of “the worst”? That is a pretty large statement to make, expecially considering that many think this is one of “the best” post-Garcia bands ever.
Everyones a critic. Phils going to be 70 next week and bobby is getting up there. They are still putting on good shows. Shows are never as good as the ones that THEY were at before because YOU were there. It was so great when YOU were there. Like you were playing lead guitar. Egomaniac
If your going to a show with expectations and make comparisons to a different band in their prime you will walk away disappointed. I’ve been to over 230 shows since 75 and am still glad the music is still being played and celebrated. Opinions are like A holes, everyones stinks but their own.
Philzone, AMEN. The fact that this band has had many excuses and options to cease, and has exercised none of them, pays tribute to all the remaining members will and strength. Frank Deal has no clue, nor ever will. He is probably one of those Gen X Grateful Dead fans, who saw a half a dozen shows and is a know it all.
There have been many bands which have come and gone since the “GD”, (I realize they are no longer the GD), however I do feel Jerry’s presence at every show since his passing, regardless of how “bad” it is. Bob, Phil, Mickey, Bill, & yes Donna et al. have a lifetime pass to do however they wish on stage, and it is a bonus no matter how their performance was. I thought that after August of 1996 we were done. Not the case, “…and the band keeps playing on…”
Hey Tennessee Jed,
Granted my terse knee-jerk response to last February’s show at RCMH was subjective at best. However, I felt compelled to respond to you (and your ego) labeling me a “Gen-Xer who probably attended a dozen shows……”
I am 51 years old. I have been celebrating the band since 1972 (how ’bout you?). I’ve seen many incarnations of the bands work…solo, acoustic,……..some transcendent shows and some half-hearted, uninspired efforts that were confused by copious amounts of drug taking by the band members and staffers (mixers, lights, etc). Not to mention by the audience, who follow them like lemmings to the sea.
The show in question was ill-conceived (and I’d argue, there was no conception, as evidenced by the playlist. The setlist and playing had no sense of flow. This was highlighted by the numerous breaks between songs and Bobby and Phil practically arguing after every number. John had little to do, and Bobby seemed hell-ben on keeping it that way. The mix was poor. The rhythm section had little to no coordination with the guitars. The guitars did little to support each other. I could go on and on.
But it is only MY ego that wants to.
I might have a “clue”………I’m sober for 10 years, and I’ve taught at The Juilliard School for the last decade. What are your “credentials” and inbibe list for the night in question?
I saw the show at Coney Island Sunday night. That was (once again, in MY opinion) one of the BEST shows I’ve seen in the last 30 years. Put the setlists side by side. Listen carefully to the give and take, and tireless musical support the members provided one another, etc. etc., and maybe you can see my point. I’m not saying I’m right. I’m just asking you to make an INFORMED objective comparison.
Any personal errors in your make-up I have alluded to that are incorrect, I apologize for.
We all need to think, before we say something.
One thing I know we can agree on…….THERE ARE BANDS BEYOND DESCRIPTION!
Wishing you all good things AND BIG PEACE,
Frank “the Clueless” Deal
