Grateful Dead Press Conference

KPIX Eyewitness News report from October 5th 1967 in San Francisco by Ben Williams, featuring a press conference by The Grateful Dead, who are objecting to marijuana drug laws (after their recent arrest for possession).

Danny Rifkin (the group’s co-manager) states that: “The real danger to society … comes from a law that is so seriously out of touch with reality.”

He goes on to claim that the media’s focus on the ‘hippie’ stereotype is encouraging police to discriminate against people identified as being part of the counter culture movement.

Ends with Rifkin dismissing the ‘hippie’ as: “A lie as well … Afraid of people who are exploring new ways of living freely, the larger society has classified … them into the myth of the hippie. The long haired drop-out who performs his rites for the convenience of visiting cameramen.”

Trip or Freak ~ Grateful Dead Halloween 1967 Winterland | “Poster From The Past” via Professor Poster

Trip or Freak ~ Grateful Dead Halloween 1967 Winterland | “Poster From The Past” via Professor Poster

This poster known as “Trip or Freak”, was the collaboration of three of the Big Five Masters and most talented artists of back in the day – Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse. It is one of the most enduring images of the psychedelic poster era.

The central image is of Lon Chaney from the Phantom of the Opera (1925) and was Kelley’s contribution. The concert information lettering at the bottom was done by Griffin and the “Trip or Freak” lettering in the form of a topless woman was by Mouse.

The “Trip or Freak Fantasmagoraball” was held 50 years ago on Halloween in 1967 at the Winterland Arena. Winterland would later be renovated and used for hundreds of concerts throughout the 70’s, but for this concert it was still a dilapidated, run down place with a definite Halloween-like atmosphere. The popularity of this “Poster From The Past” has helped push the price of a top condition original piece to as much as the $5000 mark… or more. One reason this poster is as rare as it is is because hundreds of these posters were dipped in LSD and each head was one healthy hit, this poster was literally eaten off the planet, just sayin’!

Performing that evening were The Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company. This dance/concert lived up to the awesomeness of the poster. UNFORGETABLE! It was printed two times.

Approved by the Phantom….& Professor Poster

Returning to Theaters in LA and NY – Long Strange Trip – The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead

Returning to Theaters in LA and NY – Long Strange Trip – The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead

Long Strange Trip returning to theaters this fall

October 13th â€“ 19th in Los Angeles at the Fine Arts

November 3rd  – 9th in New York at the Village East

(October 12, 2017) Amazon Studios will rerelease Long Strange Trip, Amir Bar-Lev’s critically acclaimed documentary about the Grateful Dead, in theaters on October 13th in Los Angeles and November 3rd in New York. The film has been nominated for two Critics Choice Documentary Awards, Best Director and Best Music Documentary.

The film has been screened at over 20 film festivals around the globe beginning with its premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and continues to be seen by fans worldwide through Amazon Prime.

Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story) and executive produced by Martin Scorsese (No Direction Home: Bob Dylan), Long Strange Trip is the first full-length documentary to explore the fiercely independent vision, perpetual innovation, and uncompromising commitment to their audience that made the Bay Area band one of the most influential musical groups of their generation. Artfully assembling candid interviews with the band, road crew, family members and notable Deadheads, Bar-Lev reveals the untold history of The Dead and the freewheeling psychedelic subculture that sprouted up around it. The film also provides poignant insight into the psyche of late lead guitarist Jerry Garcia, whose disdain for authority clashed with his de facto leadership of the sprawling collective that kept the show on the road.

With a soundtrack that captures some of the band’s most dynamic live performances, as well as unguarded offstage moments and never-before-seen interviews, footage and photos, Long Strange Trip explores The Dead’s singular experiment in radically eclectic music making. Much more than the “behind the music” backstory of an exceptionally talented and beloved group of musicians, the film is at once an inspiring tale of unfettered artistic expression, a heartfelt American tragedy and an incisive history of the rise and fall of 20th-century counterculture.

The official soundtrack to Long Strange Trip, featuring rare and unreleased Grateful Dead recordings, was released by Rhino in conjunction with the documentary premiere and is available on Amazon Music.

Long Strange Trip is produced by Eric Eisner (Hamlet 2), Nick Koskoff (Bad Hurt), Justin Kreutzmann (The First Waltz), Ken Dornstein (My Brother’s Bomber) and Alex Blavatnik (For the Love of Spock). Long Strange Trip is executive produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street), Rick Yorn (The Wolf of Wall Street), Thomas J. Mangan IV (The Jack Bull), Alicia Sams (Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay), Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Andy Heller, and Sandy Heller. Long Strange Trip is co-executive produced by Trixie Garcia.

Run Time: 241 minutes
