Hugh Hefner with the Grateful Dead on “Playboy After Dark” 1969

Hugh Hefner, who passed away today (9/27/2017) at the age of 91, was the host of this Playboy themed late night variety TV show, “Playboy After Dark” in the late 1960s.

On the night the Grateful Dead were the guests, someone from the Dead’s group dosed the coffee with some really good acid, and it was one of the weirder nights for the Playboy people.

Here’s a clip of Jerry Garcia  talking with Hefner, then the Grateful Dead performance of Mountains of the Moon and St Stephen.

Here is Bill Kreutzmann telling a story about that night (on the Conan O’Brian show)
