Day one… took the red eye from San Francisco > Chicago > White Plains NY – was given a lift to Bridgeport CT by the gracious Stu Levitan of Books and Beats on Madison WI 92.1 TheMIC.

Got my credentials, found fantastic tent camping under a tree near some very kind folks… then crashed out hard! 20150731_092745no

Unfortunately I missed Strangefolk (sorry Reid!), but woke up to an awesome set by Max Creek that included a deeply felt cover of Cat Steven’s “Peace Train”.20150730_200238

And then a great set by Dark Star Orchestra, opening with Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklins Tower.

Melvin Seals joined DSO part way into set 1, and stayed for the rest of the show.

This is the 20th anniversary of Gathering of the Vibes, a musical celebration inspired and infused by the spirit of Jerry Garcia and the music of the Grateful Dead. Many types of music and festival culture are represented, the Dead influence is still felt very strongly throughout the vibes.

Festival founder Ken Hayes started something very special 20 years ago, and Deadheadland is honored to once again be participating in the kind vibes at Seaside Park, in Bridgeport CT.20150730_161144

Looking forward to Day 2… Wavy Gravy will be joining the festivities as MC, and official clown in the town that was home to circus impresario PT Barnum… shake the hand, that shook the hand!

I also got a chance to connect to many vendors who are Deadheadland friends and past tour mates, and long times Vibes folk. Please visit our very dear friends at Vintage Dead and tell them Deadheadland sent you!

I also was happy to see longtime friend and DHL photographer Robbi Cohn of Dead Images, with her awesome Grateful Dead photos. Be sure and visit Dead Images!

Jerry Reconstruction

Thanks to Jerry Garcia on Facebook:

Revisiting a smokin’ Reconstruction show on this date in 1979, the only year of the project’s existence. Formed by John Kahn around a quintet of Bay Area players including Merl Saunders, Gaylord Birch on drums, Ron Stallings on sax, Ed Neumister on trombone, and then Jerry as a sideman who ended up playing nearly every show, Reconstruction played only about 50 shows in west coast clubs while the Dead were off the road in 1979.
