Bob Weir of Grateful Dead, Ratdog and Furthur, sat in withBay Area favorites Vinyl last night:
Bob sat in with Vinyl at the Sweetwater Music Hall on May 16th for a Rainforest Action Network Benefit. Bob was hanging in the bar, and rumours swirled, though everyone thought he left. At the end of their first set Korty said they would have special guests later, but by the time Bobby came out there were less than a hundred people there…
Vinyl with Bob Weir, partial set list:
Little Red Rooster
Turn On Your Lovelight
All Along the Watchtower
Danny Cao – Trumpet
Billy Frates – Guitar
Jonathan Korty – Organ/Keys
Lex Razon – Drums
Aaron Saul – Alto Sax
Geoff Vaughan – Bass
Vinyl is the rare sort of band that can meld funk, Latin jazz, dub and reggae without coming across as pale imitators of the style of the moment. Instead, Vinyl can alternately sound like the best live funk, Latin, reggae or dub band you’ve heard in ages–and occasionally, all at the same time. Instead of going for flash or gimmicks, Vinyl brings it with fierce musicianship and zesty abandon, proving you can have both substance and style. It’s an approach that has made the band favorites of the festival circuit, but the best place to experience them is on the dance floor of a hot, sweaty indoor venue.
