The Rhythm Devils w/Keller Williams have been killing in the last week with their new tour and lineup. Doing a great mix of Dead classics, thier own songs, and songs from bandmates Keller Williams and Davey Knowles. I have not heard a single bad comment, and everyone who has seen them has said that EVERYONE should see them! The Rhythm Devils are playing at Gathering of the Vibes Saturday July 31 at 9-11pm on the Main Stage.
The Devils will be followed by Primus, with Ratdog and Scaring the Children’s Jay Lane on drum.
In the course of 11 months, since Furthur debuted they have toured their asses off (and we have danced ours!) – reinventing the whole Dead experience for us, and each step going Furthur – from the expanded Furthur and Friends sets at Phil’s 70th, to the amazing album sets at Furthur Festival… and a stellar Summer Tour that included several festival stops. After a short break, the band warms up for two nights at the Nokia in Times Square – then the train goes to Bridgeport for Friday night at Gathering of the Vibes – playing two full sets from 9pm to 1 am!

With an immediate hit of a bright rockin’ sound, The Fall Risk is worth it, and I think they’ll catch you.
I caught them at La Honda Fair and Music Festival. After having just been at two bigger festivals, Santa Rosa’s Harmony Festival the day before, and Furthur Festival the week prior, La Honda was a different story. And, as it was the same weekend as Manchester Tennessee’s monster Bonnaroo, which I had covered in 2009 – I dubbed this small mountain festival, the “Anti-roo”! Small, friendly, family. In fact, it was mostly local – and were they not such friendly locals, I might have felt like the out of place big city boy.
I drove down from Sonoma (like I told ya, I was at Harmony the day before to see 7 Walkers), across the Bridge, pit stop in Twin Peaks at the SF field offices, then the best part of the drive – highway 1 towards Half Moon Bay. I love driving this route, the Cabrillo Highway, one of the most beautiful drives in California!
I got to there early and wandered the festival, and listed to some performers, all very good, and waited for The Fall Risk’s set to begin. I will admit – I had never heard of this band until a few weeks before. When Furthur began their summer tour rehearsal shows in Marin, they introduced a new singer, Jeff Pehrson. Zoe Ellis had stepped away from the Furthurette microphone, to focus on her other singing projects (Zoe is much loved by the Deadheads, she was a Phil and Friend way back in the early days!). Jeff used to be in a band called Box Set, and before that he was with a group called Passenger in the early 90’s. Sunshine Becker was (and is) inPassenger – so she must have had a hand bring inJeff. Great choice, her voice and Jeff’s are wonderful together.
With Jeff being the new kid in the band, I thought I would seek him out – and I discovered he was not only friendly and real, but also had a great band. He let me know The Fall Risk was playing at this small festival, and it fit perfectly into my build-my-own-festival weekend - 7 Walkers Friday at Harmony, and again Sunday at GAMH in SF made for a grateful sandwich.
Maybe I wouldn’t have heard of The Fall Risk if it wasn’t for Jeff being added into Furthur… and therefore would have missed something special to share with all of you!
Once again, Phil and Bobby have led me to more good music. I thoroughly enjoyed their set, and the festival too. Upbeat, colorful, soulful, and humorous songwriting mixed with a joyous performance. These guys like to play their songs for people, and it shows. Through a nine song set, (short songs compared to Furthur), everyone in the band did get a turn showing their musical chops, and it all rocked and moved the crowd. Dancing happened throughout, twirling hippie woman, playful children.
It turns out Jeff Pehrson is a talented singer songwriter guitar player that can carry a show as well as a tune, as Jeff easily talked to the crowd, and bantered with his bandmates on stage. Jeff was at the center, but always stepped back and let everyone in The Fall Risk shine. Jeff’s voice and playing are intensely engaging, and heartfelt; while he is back-up in Furthur, Jeff is definitely a front man!
They included a Dead song, and not just because of Jeff’s new gig, “Friend of the Devil” has been in their set rotation pre-Furthur. I enjoyed it all, but really enjoyed the sadly-sweet "Lemonade", and also loved the playful harmonica in "Back to You" and the great lines in "Love is the Answer" (question me). Their orignal songs all had enough musical meat to satisfy me, and yet were pop and approachable for anyone (i.e. not just jam rock fans), and I encourage you to get to know them. And I encourage Furthur to add The Fall Risk to their next multi band event (New Years? Furthur Festival 2011?)
You can see The Fall Risk this weekend! They are playing Saturday July 24, from 2-5pm at the San Gregorio Store (www.sangregoriostore.com) and it sounds like a sweet spot for a show. Bring the family, and there is great places for hiking and dog walking too.

People walking in and out of the Dead Images tent at the Allgood Festival left with many emotions.
All encountered a complex and bittersweet combination of joy and sadness. And what, you may ask, was going down at the Dead Images booth? An historical and musical account of a band that was the springboard for hundreds of bands and even the festival circuit as we now know it…the good ole Grateful Dead. And at the helm of this “eyes of the world” that brought out all these feelings and memories is the photographic genius of Robbi Cohn.
Robbi, who saw her first Dead show in 1970,
has been a fixture in the Grateful Dead world since the 1980’s, when she started to photograph the band, show after show. Her pictures began to pop up in the parking lot, and then made their way onto Grateful Dead calendars. Then, almost magically, her pics were everywhere… in Toni Brown’s Relix Magazine, in Deadbase, on J. Garcia hang tags and on officially licensed postage stamps from Mongolia and Montserrat, just to cite a few. Many of these images are iconic…practically everyone from Grateful Dead tour has seen them. The picture of Bobby whispering into Jerry’s ear while Jerry cups his ear to better hear, has been seen all over the lots of Grateful Dead shows. Or, who can forget the incredible picture that evokes “sense and color” of Jerry’s blue hair blowing in the wind as he sang “Birdsong”. The list goes on.
After a 7 year personal hiatus, Robbi is back, with literally hundreds of pictures, many new, to share with old and new generations. The pictures have the date/venue, and many have the song being sung at the time of the click of her 35 mm camera. (Yes, these are NOT digital, all are done in a darkroom by Robbi.) I personally was overwhelmed by the conversations in the tent at AllGood. So many already owned some of her pictures they purchased years ago, and these framed masterpieces are now in their homes and offices. And it appears that many images will be finding their way into others homes, offices and hearts.
Robbi asked me to come on board with her that weekend and our goal is to get Robbi to start shooting the numerous bands that are now playing festivals and shows all year round. The images she captures share the emotion expressed by the members of the Grateful Dead. And her shots include the numerous guests of the band while they jammed onstage. Upon looking at these pictures, one can easily see the unspoken communication between each musician as they became one in the “group mind” aspect that is familiar territory to jamband fans and musicians.
What really made an impression on me were the memories that we all shared of the band that whole weekend at AllGood. Countless stories of shows, setlists, and personal adventures were freely talked about and all the while I could see the smile spreading on Robbi’s face. She’s back home.

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead , Bill Kreutzmann, together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Maliare on the road as the 7 Walkers . 7 Walkers , which also features multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), and legendary bassist George Porter Jr. (Funky Meters) and will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. Bill Kreutzmann also tours select dates this summer with his Grateful Dead partner Mickey Hart in the Rhythm Devils . Over the years, Kreutzmann and Hart have transcended rock and roll drum stereotypes with polyrhythmic explorations of the world of percussion, using an extraordinary variety of instruments and approaches. The aftermath of this collaboration was the larger Rhythm Devils, which have made periodic reappearances over the years. The lineup for this July 2010 tour includes Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, Keller Williams (guitar, vocals), Davy Knowles (guitar, vocals), Sikiru Adepoju (talking drum), and Andy Hess (bass). 7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.
Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since) first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy’s for real man, I like this guy.’ Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn’t separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can’t plan it; You can’t make it happen. And then we started playing together.”
