Setlist and Full Video:
Dedicated to John Perry Barlow
| Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band with Eric Krasno |
| Thursday February 8, 2018 |
Terrapin Crossroads, San Rafael CA
The show opened with a beautiful Attics Of My Life, Phil Lesh, Alex Koford, Grahame Lesh – with Grahame’s guitar the sole instrument. Phil then spoke, a brief and beautiful eulogy to Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow. He said that tonight’s performance would be dedicated to Barlow, and the show included some of his songs, as well as plenty of songs that JPB would love to dance too. We mourn his loss, and celebrate his spirit. And we keep on dancing. On the original setlist, they were going to play “He Was A Friend of Mine”, which many of us in the room could say… the show ran long, and they kept the encore to one song, Box of Rain. Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be… to be…
We love you John – safe passage to the next adventure. And Thank you Phil Lesh, for your eloquent words, beautiful music, and the love you bring. We are truly blessed to be part of this Terrapin Nation.
Always grateful,
Happycat!

I realized at about 6:00 Tuesday afternoon that the unthinkable was becoming real and started tweeting about it. But Twitter releases everything “upside-down” and requires severe brevity.
So I’ve decided to reassemble them into something like prose, yielding this micromanifesto:
For the first time ever,I am truly ashamed of my country. I thought of Americans as kind, decent, generous, fair, rational… Guess not. This is a terrible time for me to consider exile. But I don’t want to share the American Dream with those who are tone-deaf to its melody.
My family has been in America for 400 years on each side. But now it feels as if I’m being chased out newcomers who think they own the place. My first reaction has been to haul out my list of escape hatches from previous near lunges (Viet Nam, Reagan, both Bushes, etc.): Vancouver, Rio, Michoacán, St. Barthe’s, Provence, Laos, Belize, Hong Kong, but…
I find people turning to me for reassurance and advice. And hell, I’m American as it gets, and I realize this may actually provide an opportunity to restore America to greatness in *my* sense of the term: to show the world that we *are* as generally decent as we’re thought to be, that America *is* as dedicated to its founding principles as ever, perhaps more so.
Despite our elevation of a thorough creep to *lead* us, we can be guided by our “better angels.” We can isolate this toxic asshole and prevent his hatreds, arrogance, bigotry, fear, and ignorance from defining our National Character in the eyes of the world.
No! Now is the time to dig in, stand tall, and be *real* American patriots.

May 4th, 2014:
Remembering our dearly departed friend, guitar player Michael Hinton, on his birthday. Michael passed away last year, on Jerry’s birthday.
Michael played with Merl Saunders in the Rainforest band (among others) often taking the leads Jerry Garcia played on the Blues Form the Rainforest album. Michael also played with Merl on some of the Twilight Zone episodes (80’s TZ) – and this was one of his favorites. It also features a cameo by none other than John Barlow! Enjoy!
Twilight Zone Dead Run ‘soundtrack band’ included Michael Hinton on Lead, and Bob Weir, Brent Mydland, Norton Buffalo, Merl Saunders… Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow plays trucker #2 in a rare acting role.
