The opening verse sung by a projection of Jerry Garcia, perfectly blended in with the live performance of Sturgill Simpson, and this tribute band assembled by Don Was, including Phil Lesh’s son Grahame Lesh on guitar m
The camera cut to the balcony where the remaining members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann sat with their family, and the emotion evoked by the sight and sound of Jerry from Bob’s wife Natasha Weir, and tearful eyes from Jerry’s daughter Trixie Garcia. Jerry Garcia passed away August 9, 1995.
I don’t think there was a Deadhead watching who wasn’t in tears as well. Such a beautiful tribute.
During another emotional part of the set, Grahame Lesh took a verse while an image of Phil was projected near him. Phil Lesh passed away recently, on October 25th, 2024. He knew of the Kennedy Honors, and as I understand, was planning on being there.
