Bob Dylan – Only A River (Live) April 20, 2023 – Nagoya, Japan (Aichi Prefectural Art Theater)

Only a River is a song recorded by Bob Weir off of his album Blue Mountain – it was written by Josh Ritter

“I am speechless”, Josh Ritter (@joshritter) retweeted when he got the note that Bob Dylan sang ‘Only A River’ in Nagoya, Japan on April 20, 2023. And he added “I wrote that song in the stairwell of my dorm in college, 25 years ago. Music is a blessed traveler.” Next day he tweeted “When I learned yesterday that Mr. Dylan had sung a song that I’d written, I was washed over with a feeling that that can only be described as a cousin of vertigo. So many songs, and all of them rambling around out there. Somehow, this one found Dylan’s pasture. How beautiful. I wrote Only a River in my dorm in college. Like all my favorites, it came unbidden, and I just wrote it down. Many years later, as I got the amazing opportunity to work with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, this song rose to the top of the pack, asking to be let out the door. I sent it to Weir and Josh Kaufman, who beautifully arranged and recorded and performed the song that Dylan eventually must have heard”.

Grateful Dead Live at Great Western LA Forum on 1989-02-12

The thing was, Bob Dylan* just sat in with the Grateful Dead on this particular February night in Los Angeles, and he just played guitar, and hung out. Except for during “Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again“, which Bob Weir sang, and at one point in the Dylan penned song he asked Dylan to “…jump right in” ~ And he does, after a short hesitation, finishing the verse.

Now the rainman gave me two cures
Then he said, “Jump right in”
The one was Texas medicine
The other was just railroad gin
An’ like a fool I mixed them
An’ it strangled up my mind
An’ now people just get uglier
An’ I have no sense of time
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

He also got the Grateful Dead to play the rare “Monkey and the Engineer” for the first time in 17 years, and what is possibly the only full electric version:

This was one of my favorite Grateful Dead shows in my personal “early period”, though seasoned heads at the time had mixed views about it. Of special note, they had Spencer Davis** sit in during the first set, for “How Long Blues” and “Gimme Some Lovin’“. So glad I made it! A very rare and different night of Grateful Dead!
