Of course most Deadheads are aware that Mill Valley is the home of Bob Weir, the Grateful Dead’s ace rhythm guitar player – and Bob is also part owner of the Sweetwater, as well as a frequent performer there.  There is no word as to his attendance at the screening or if he is a “special guest” at the after party show, though people do tend to speculate such things….

For Deadheads, the words “four-hour Grateful Dead documentary” will generate a level of excitement second only to the first notes of “Bertha” at the Greek Theater. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story) and produced by Martin Scorsese, this spellbinding epic captures the Dead’s wild, multi-decade journey from scruffy local hippies to the biggest band in the universe. The film’s thoughtful, thorough exploration of a great American rock group will make you laugh, cry and feel that magic Dead energy from the opening frame. Featuring never-before-seen concert footage and illuminating interviews with band members, Long Strange Trip captures the spirit of an eclectic ensemble who embraced freedom and fun above all else. Bar-Lev adds the colorful voices of roadies, recording engineers, tour managers, fans and friends to paint a vivid, vibrant and occasionally dire picture of groundbreaking artists searching for connection, meaning and light in the strangest of places.

In Person: Director Amir Bar-Lev

Berkeley-raised Amir Bar-Lev is an award-winning documentarian who has covered subjects ranging from survivors of the Holocaust (Fighter, 2000) to art-world prodigies (My Kid Could Paint That, 2007), patriotic soldiers (The Tillman Story, 2010) and the Penn State sexual abuse scandal (Happy Valley, 2014). He is the founder of Axis Films, co-producer on the Oscar®-nominated Hurricane Katrina documentary Trouble the Water (2008), and director of the multimedia Re:Generation Music Project (2011). His latest film, Long Strange Trip, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Long Strange Trip has also screened last March in New York, had it’s West Coast premiere last weekend at the San Francisco Film Fest. The film will have additional theatrical screenings in New York and Los Angeles on May 26th. It is set for wide release via Amazon Prime as a 6-part series in June.  A soundtrack CD is also being released, exclusively through Amazon.
