Richard Alden “Rick” Griffin (June 18, 1944 – August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. As a contributor to the underground comix movement, his work appeared regularly in Zap Comix. Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, designing some of their best-known posters and album covers such as Aoxomoxoa. His work within the surfing subculture included both film posters and his comic strip, Murphy

Rick Griffin Happy Birthday

Via Professor Poster:

Today I take the time to remember my old friend Rick Griffin on what would have been his 72nd birthday. Rick was one of the original BIG five psychedelic rock artists and can be considered to be one of the men that truly drew the face on Rock & Roll!. His posters and artwork cover everything from cartoons and comics to classical paintings and everything in between. He is most remembered for his incredible work with the rock posters from the 60’s Avalon & Fillmore as well as his work within the surfing subculture included both film posters and his comic strip, “Murphy”. He was taken from us far to early in his life as a result of a fatal motorcycle accident in Sonoma California in August of 1991. He is missed by all of us that knew and loved him as well as the multitude of fans of his beautiful and unforgettable art. Gone, but certainly NOT… or ever will be forgotten. He lives on through his art! Rip ole buddy! ….
